Open Sistemas presents in Valencia the integration of OSM on gvSIG

19/11/2007

The Geographic Information System of the “Conselleria de Infrastructuras y Transporte” is still growing, at the same time that OSM, thanks to this integration, obtains a powerful editing tool.

Within the III Jornadas gvSIG frame (which is an international convention addressed to technical users and developers, that took place last week in Valencia), Open Sistemas presented an integration prototype of OpenStreetMap (OSM) on gvSIG, which is the Geographic Information System developed by the Generalitat Valenciana.

For the last few months, Open Sistemas has been working with the Conselleria de Infrastructuras y Transportes in order to develop a new plugin that allows the integration of both systems. This integration impels the OpenStreetMap project by making available a powerful edition tool and embodying in a new remote data base for gvSIG in addition to the already included data for OGC protocols.

OpenStreetMap is a collaborative project that was born in the United Kingdom. Its main goal is to create a world roads map by using the geographic information obtained from portable GPS devices. OSM was started two years ago and it was expected to be a project on generating navigable road maps, however, due to its versatility, several OSM cartography based applications have been created both for fixed and portable environments.
